Sampling into the good the use of cosmetics, we can say that the Egyptians were those started out it all (sometime about the 4th century BC). You will discover historical evidences of the Egyptians using eye chemicals, scented oils and even animal fat based ointments. These cosmetics were employed by the women of the upper class in order to enhance the beauty of their facial pores and skin and even treat epidermis problem like wrinkles, stretch-marks, scars, hair growth and so on. This brings us to an interesting conclusion i. e. there has not been any major move in the purpose lurking behind the consumption of makeup products.
The Western part of the world was naturally a late entrant into cosmetic history and the use of cosmetics and it all started throughout the middle ages. Here too cosmetics were an high level affair and the commoners were bereft of this luxury. The use of cosmetics was not used in a very positive way by the Cathedral and it finally prohibited its use. Queen Palma extended her support for the Church’s position. Hence cosmetics found its new lovers in the brothels where it adorned the faces of prostitutes. A fascinating twist to the account was included with Hitler declaring that cosmetics were better matched for the faces of Clowns and ladies belonging to the master race should shun its use.
An additional two hundred years observed an instant growth in cosmetic use and even women of the lower strata of the world started to use cosmetic makeup products. The 18th century was very significant in conditions of all of the changes in technology for the availability of cosmetics. The French begun to use new methods, chemicals and natural ingredients. More secure chemicals like zinc o2 ended uphad been used as the base and the use of business lead or copper was removed. At the conclusion of the nineteenth century, the first beauty salons were set up.
Rapid use of cosmetic cosmetics started from the early 1930s; actresses and theater artists started to use make up in their films. Sarah Bernhardt and Jean Harlow spearheaded the so-called cosmetic motion and made the utilization of cosmetics fashionable. After Universe War II, there was rapid growth in the cosmetic industry where more and more women began using cosmetics. Soon with the introduction of electronic digital media like TV and Radio, cosmetics became a part of every women’s life.
To date the significance of cosmetics has not reduced, in simple fact, increased in living of women. It is now over a 50 million dollar industry. Yet , as its history evolves, makeup will take on new meaning. Past cosmetic background aimed at women’s beauty and the culture of anti-aging. The near future will give attention to the dangers natural in the continued use of synthetically formulated beauty products. These synthetic chemicals have proven to be toxic in nature, and over time, clinical studies will prove them to be hazardous to one’ health. Many of these toxins have already recently been linked to cancer, labor and birth abnormalities, infertility, liver and kidney malfunctions, and much, much more.
Recently, a lecture was presented by the Environmental Working Group, the EWG. Their quest is to protect children from the effects of toxic chemicals in the meals, water, air, and products we use daily. With out having into too much detail here is a summary of the conclusions of the EWG as it relates to makeup products.
Women, on average, use 12 personal care products daily that expose them to 160 toxic substances; 10 babies, still in their mother’s womb, were tested for chemicals in their bloodstreams with these results; 287 toxic chemicals were found of which 134 were linked to cancer; 151 were associated to birth defects; 186 were linked to infecundity; 130 were linked to the immune system, and so on.
Now, if one questions what this all means, consider the following statistics; there has been an 84% increase in Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia in children from 75 to 2002; a 59% increase in brain tumor during the same period; a doubling of Hypospadias (birth defect of the urethra in males) in infant males in the same period; sperm is important in men are falling for a price of 1% per year; one particular in 8 women will get breast cancer; one particular in 3 women will experience some form of cancer in their life-time; 1 in 2 men will experience some sort of tumor in their lifetime.
That is enough statistics to provide you with pause in the makeup used daily. Past and future articles will get deeper into this subject matter. For now, historically, we have presented the two sides of cosmetic background. The past emphasized the wonder aspects of personal attention products, as the future should and hopefully give attention to the dangers inherent in the daily use of toxic-laden cosmetic products.
